Mr. Smith has been practicing for more than 26 years. He has been a solo practitioner for the last 13 years. Prior to starting his own firm, he worked at the Minnesota Attorney General's Office, Sprenger & Lang, andMesserli & Kramer. Mr. Smith is a 1987 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law, where he served as an Articles Editor for the Iowa Law Review.

Mr. Smith is a member of the local and National Employment Lawyers Association and the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is a former president of the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers. Mr. Smith is a former member of the Governing Council for the MSBA Labor and Employment Law Section. He currently serves on the Board of Governors for the Minnesota Association for Justice (f/k/a Minnesota Trial Lawyers Association). Mr. Smith served eight years as a member of the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights, an international human rights organization. He served six years as a Human Rights Commissioner for a local municipality. He has been an active member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, where he has served as a member of the Assembly.
