Mr. Smith has been practicing for more than 22 years. He has been a solo practitioner for the last 9 years. Prior to starting his own firm, he worked at the Minnesota Attorney General's Office, Sprenger & Lang, and Messerli & Kramer. Mr. Smith is a 1987 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law, where he served as an Articles Editor for the Iowa Law Review.
Mr. Smith is a member of the local and National Employment Lawyers Association and the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is a former president of the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers. Mr. Smith is a former member of the Governing Council for the MSBA Labor and Employment Law Section. He currently serves on the Board of Governors for the Minnesota Association for Justice (f/k/a Minnesota Trial Lawyers Association). Mr. Smith served eight years as a member of the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights, an international human rights organization. He served six years as a Human Rights Commissioner for a local municipality. He has been an active member of the Minnesota State Bar Association, where he has served as a member of the Assembly.
Finally, Mr. Smith is one of the recipients of the 2002 Minnesota Lawyers Attorney of the Year award. He also received the 2009 Justice Works Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (MN-CAIR).
